Submarine mixes dark comedy, quirkiness, and romance. The effect is one of the oddball, goth, romance types that anyone who enjoys the darker side of tales can appreciate. Personally, I loved it, all the way down to the '60's hairstyles, the Scottish accents (make sure you click on the subtitles), and the fact that the female character at one time says something like (I'm paraphrasing): "I needed to feel better, so I decided to burn something." Bonding through fire and flame is a sure way to help the goth culture find common ground through true devotion, and Submarine is a win in my book any day!
